Poverty indicators in Yemen 2024

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) released its annual report, “Measuring Multidimensional Poverty in Yemen,” in February 2024. The report highlights the following key poverty indicators in Yemen:

  • The percentage of individuals experiencing multidimensional poverty in Yemen has reached 82.7 percent, indicating that more than eight out of every ten people are affected by poverty.
  • The proportion of people suffering from deprivation stands at 46.7 percent.
  • Poverty is significantly higher in rural areas (89.4 percent) compared to urban areas (68.9 percent).
  • The livelihoods of over 54 percent of the population have deteriorated.
  • Those living in multidimensional poverty face 38.6 percent of all possible forms of deprivation in Yemen.
  • Nationally, the number of years of schooling and sanitation are the indicators with the largest proportions of poor people affected. More than 70 percent of the population suffers from deprivation and multidimensional poverty in these areas. In terms of the contribution of each of the seventeen indicators to the multidimensional poverty index at the national level, the indicators contributing most to poverty are the number of years of schooling (17.1 percent), cooking fuel (9.1 percent), and sanitation (8.1 percent).
  • Poverty has worsened in Yemen since 2014, according to expectations. However, the precise extent of the deterioration can only be determined through preliminary data. Notes on poverty in Yemen for 2017, based on data from the Household Budget Survey of 2014, show that 49 percent of Yemen’s population (13 million people) live in monetary poverty.
  • The governorates of Al-Bayda and Al-Dhalea are identified as the poorest in Yemen.
