Yemen’s Economic Indicators 2025

On 2 June 2025, the World Bank Office in Yemen, in coordination with the Middle East and North Africa Economics Team, issued an extensive report entitled Yemen Economic Monitor – Spring 2025: Persistent Fragility Amid Rising Risks. The report included the following information and conclusions:

1.    Sharp Decline in Per Capita GDP: The report revealed that Yemen’s real per capita GDP has fallen by 58 per cent since 2015.

2.    Doubling of Inflation in Government-Controlled Areas: Inflation rates reached more than 30 per cent in 2024.

3.    Contraction in Government Revenues: The Houthi-imposed blockade on oil exports caused government revenues (excluding grants) to shrink to 2.5 per cent of GDP in 2024.

4.    Economic Fragmentation: The Yemeni economy has effectively split into two distinct zones, each with its own monetary institutions and exchange rates, impeding the implementation of unified economic policies.

5.    Widespread Food Shortages and Social Impacts: More than two-thirds of the population suffer from inadequate food consumption, with households resorting to coping strategies that are likely to exacerbate poverty.

6.    Bleak Economic Outlook: Real GDP is projected to contract by 1.5 per cent in 2025, alongside a 19 per cent decline in nominal per capita GDP.
